HEAVY WOOD TIMBERS
Some notes from the November 2011 Structural Engineer magazine:
Wood has 400 times better insulating properties than steel and 15 times better insulating
properties than concrete.
Heavy timbers can be more impervious to fire than steel. Where steel will fail under
intense heat, heavy wood timbers will char, forming an insulated layer that is protective
from flame. Charring preserves the inner wood and allows heavy wood timbers to
maintain their strength during a fire.
Wood is the only building material that was once a living thing.
